Poem – Ashes on the Heart

Poem – Ashes on the Heart
by Sean Ellwood

Ashes lace like tangled vines
On the innocence of my heart

Fires once hot leave reminders
Of what once was a reason to live

Pathways perhaps but lessons learned
Of routes better yet not taken

Memories of fairer climes and happy days
Oft mixed with bitter regret

What can I learn from painful lessons
I seldom know for certain

Oft it’s the snowfall of relationships
That teach us the most it seems

Yet with banners aloft I still proclaim
I am here-alive-undefeated

So take my hand and walk with me
In pastures long forgotten

Love’s a rocky road filled with thorns
It’s easy to loose your way

But all the same it’s pleasure provided
By the goal and the journey

Risk not, dare not and life is not worthwhile
A kiss on the wind and a chance at love
Aye, it makes one smile.
